Olivia DiCocco
Melbourne Youth Music Invergowrie Scholarship Program Recipient 2011-2015
Since joining Melbourne Youth Music in 2011, Olivia DiCocco progressed rapidly through the Ensemble Program, with support from The Invergowrie Foundation. Olivia entered the program in the Melbourne Youth Junior Strings and advanced to Melbourne Youth Music’s second-tier symphony orchestra, the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra.
Assistance from the Invergowrie Foundation Scholarship enabled Olivia’s ongoing involvement, supporting fees, travel, and one-on-one mentoring lessons with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra violinist, Philippa West (pictured here with Olivia). Working with Philippa, she gained inspiration and insight from a professional musician, a career Olivia aspires to pursue.
“My MYM experience over the years has been an amazing opportunity to further my music studies,” says Olivia, “It has taught me so many skills about being in an orchestra, and I really look forward to playing works by magnificent composers with such a great orchestra. My lessons with Philippa have greatly helped my playing and given me a fantastic opportunity to learn from an amazing MSO violinist.”
Olivia’s mother Raelene agrees, “Olivia’s violin playing has improved every year with MYM. She has a passion for the violin, and thanks to MYM, her sight reading is exceptional. Her self-confidence, social skills and most importantly her ensemble skills have all improved. Olivia’s lesson with Philippa was great – there is no equivalent to gaining knowledge from an elite musician.”
Without the support of the Invergowrie Foundation, Olivia would not have been able to participate in Melbourne Youth Music’s inspirational extension music program.
“I am forever grateful for this outstanding opportunity that you at Invergowrie have given me – thank you so much!” – Olivia DiCocco.
